I began my exploration with clay in 2016 at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. My newest body of clay fired objects focuses on marine and land flowering plants. I began my exploration with clay in 2016 at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. My newest body of clay fired objects focuses on marine and land flowering plants. Flowers have often been a focus of my work and creating clay flowers seemed like a natural progression for me. I don’t have any preconceived ideas before I begin each sculpture, rather, I allow them to “blossom” as I create them, hand cutting and painting each leaf and stem as I build them.
Growing up in South Africa, I have many memories of walking along the beaches, stopping in tide pools and delighting in the many beautiful colors and shapes of the sea plants and these images influence my work. In a time where there is so much turmoil in the world around us, my sincere hope is that these sculptures will bring joy to the viewer.
